Quick Draw All Things Sci-Fi

I had the opportunity to check out Quick Draw, a live drawing event happening every 3rd Thursday at 1192 Folsom in SoMa. While a nightclub is a pretty unusual setting for an art show, the Quick Draw crew really makes it work for them. The night is a unique mixture of music provided by a live DJ and several artists working on sketches around a theme culminating in art which is posted on the wall for viewing and sale. The theme this past month, in honor of the new Star Wars movie was “All Things Sci-Fi.”
Artists were setup on long tables filled with art supplies on the dance floor. They busily worked on their pieces depicting both cute and grotesque aliens and droids while enjoying the music and drinks. The environment is very welcoming with artists showing off their latest creations including zines, buttons, prints and stickers. Everyone is encouraged to bring a pad and pencil and draw regardless of skill level and join in on the event. Aside from the aforementioned tables, several couches are placed around the space for a cozier experience. In addition to the DJ, vintage cartoons play on the screens above the bar to spark those creative juices.
As the night goes on drawings are completed and displayed on the walls providing a makeshift gallery. Viewers are encouraged to speak to the artists regarding sale. Most prices are about 10-20 dollars and buying directly from the artist is a great way to meet the creator and build artistic community. Make you way down on 3rd Thursday to pick up an inexpensive new piece of art for framing or perhaps even create your own.
